Brian Daboll ‘exploded’ on Mike Kafka weeks before Giants fired him

Brian Daboll’s fiery temper and inability to control his emotions both on the sideline and in his dealings with staff was a big part of his undoing as New York Giants head coach, leading to his firing this week.

In detailing some of the events leading up to the organization’s decision to move on from Daboll this week, ESPN’s Jordan Ranaan detailed an incident a player told him about of “Daboll exploding and threatening to take away playcalling from assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Mike Kafka after tight end Theo Johnson dropped a crucial third-down pass downfield against the Eagles.”

Picks, predictions NFL Week 11: How will New York Giants start new era?

Can the New York Giants, in their first game under the direction of interim head coach Mike Kafka, upset the Green Bay Packers? See how the Big Blue View staff feels about that question and the rest of the NFL Week 11 slate below.

Chris Pflum

Season record: 83-49-1 (63.0%)

I’ll be honest: I have no clue what to expect in this game. There’s some things I think I think I’m going to see, like the West Coast quick game and levels concepts that worked well for the Giants back in 2022. I also expect to see some banished...

Were the Giants right to fire Brian Daboll?

Were the Giants right to fire Brian Daboll?

It’s been a busy week for the New York Giants.

First the Giants lost 24-20 to the Chicago Bears, falling to 2-8 for the third straight season. The next day saw Brian Daboll fired as head coach, and OC and assistant head coach Mike Kafka elevated to interim head coach. Kafka then shook up the Giants’ quarterback depth chart, naming Jameis Winston the QB2 and starter if Jaxson Dart was unable to clear the concussion protocol in time.

This brings us back to the foundational question: Was firing Brian Daboll the right move for the Giants?

There’ve been calls for...

New York Giants players say ‘Time is now’ to play our best

New York Giants players say ‘Time is now’ to play our best

Brian Burns has been through this midseason head-coaching change scenario before. A ridiculous four times in his seven-year career, in fact.

  • 2019: Ron Rivera (5-7) | Perry Fewell (0-4)
  • 2022: Matt Rhule (1-4) | Steve Wilks (6-6)
  • 2023: Frank Reich (1-10) | Chris Tabor (1-5)
  • 2025: Brian Daboll (2-8) | Mike Kafka (?)

Burns’ voice carries weight in the locker room, and has since GM Joe Schoen traded for prior to the 2024 season. As the defense’s best player this season, and a whose professionalism has made him a clear leader, what was Burns’ message to...

Popular wide receiver finally returning to New York Giants

Popular wide receiver finally returning to New York Giants

Isaiah Hodgins is coming back to the New York Giants. Finally.

The Giants are signing Hodgins, who starred for them during their improbable run to the playoffs, off the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad.

This move comes several weeks after a season-ending injury to No. 1 wide receiver Malik Nabers and then a hamstring injury Darius Slayton left the Giants without enough reliable wide receivers.

Hodgins, of course, played in the offense Mike Kafka now runs for the Giants from 2022-2024, and prior to that with the Buffalo Bills. He should provide Jameis Winston this week and Jaxson Dart hopefully the...

Graham Gano placed on IR, possibly ending his New York Giants career

Graham Gano placed on IR, possibly ending his New York Giants career

Graham Gano’s season, and his tenure with the New York Giants, might be over.

The Giants on Wednesday placed the 38-year-old Gano on injured reserve with a herniated disc in his neck. That is the second time this season and the fourth time in three years that Gano has been placed on IR.

Gano missed four games earlier this season after suffering a groin injury right before opening kickoff of the Giants’ Week 3 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He returned to play in two games, but revealed after missing a 45-yard field goal in Week 9 against the...

Jameis Winston’s message to Giants fans: “Come ready”

Jameis Winston’s message to Giants fans: “Come ready”

The New York Giants could be starting their third quarterback of the 2025 season.

It was announced Wednesday morning that interim head coach Mike Kafka named Jameis Winston the Giants’ QB2 behind Jaxson Dart. That means that if Dart doesn’t clear the concussion protocol by Sunday, Winston will be starting against the Green Bay Packers.

The Giants return home to host the Packers following yet another defensive collapse in which the Giants blew a double-digit lead against the Chicago Bears. Winston’s message to Giants’ fans, however, is a positive one — as we’d expect from the charismatic former No.1 pick....

QB Jaxson Dart won’t play for New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers

QB Jaxson Dart won’t play for New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers

The New York Giants will start Jameis Winston at quarterback on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers with Jaxson Dart in the concussion protocol. Interim head coach Mike Kafka made that announcement on Wednesday.

Dart was not on the practice field on Wednesday, leading a long list of Giants who did not practice. In all, 10 players were held out of Kafka’s first practice as an NFL head coach.

The most mysterious of those injuries might be to Evan Neal, who was held out due to a hamstring injury. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft has...

Giants lose practice squad wide receiver to Denver Broncos

Giants lose practice squad wide receiver to Denver Broncos

Lil’Jordan Humphrey, who was elevated from the New York Giants practice squad for three games earlier this season, has been signed by the Denver Broncos to their 53-man roster.

In the three games Humphrey played for the Giants he caught four passes for 55 yards. All of those catches, and eight of his 10 targets, came in the first game he played. That was the Giants’ Week 6 upset victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Those three elevations meant that the Giants would have had to add him to the 53-man roster to activate him again.

Instead of doing that, the...

9 takeaways from New York Giants head coach Mike Kafka’s press conference

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Mike Kafka said on Wednesday during his first press conference as interim head coach of the New York Giants that he will continue to call offensive plays. Kafka, in his fourth season with the Giants, has had that responsibility this year and in three of those four seasons.

Kafka, promoted to interim head coach from offensive coordinator this week after the firing of Brian Daboll, said that tight ends coach Tim Kelly will move into the role of offensive coordinator. Kelly was offensive coordinator of the Houston Texans from 2019-2021 and offensive coordinator of the Tennessee...

New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers 2025, Week 11: What you need to know

New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers 2025, Week 11: What you need to know

The Mike Kafka era will begin for the New York Giants this Sunday when their new interim head coach will lead into the 2-8 Giants into a Week 11 matchup with the 5-3-1 Green Bay Packers.

The Giants have lost four straight games and fired former head coach Brian Daboll this week. The Packers have lost two straight, are 5-3-1 and in position to make the playoffs as a wild card team. Green Bay made the playoffs in both 2023 and 2024. Giants fans might be incredulous that despite all of that, [Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is facing questions...
