Last year, Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald introduced the weekly captain system. This was a departure from the season long captains under Pete Carroll. Last week, Seattle named Sam Darnold, Brady Russell, Leonard Williams as game captains for the opening day game against the San Francisco 49ers. However, this week the honors will go to four players.
Zach Charbonnet, Charles Cross, Julian Love, and AJ Barner have all been named game captains for Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Last week, Charbonnet scored the team’s only touchdown to go along with 47 rushing yards. It will be interesting to see if Charbonnet continues to get more carries over Kenneth Walker III, as was the case last week (Charbonnet had 12 carries to Walker’s 10).
Cross had an impressive outing against the 49ers as well, coming away with the teams second highest PFF grade on the offense, with a grade of 79.7. Love had 10 tackles to go along with the team’s only sack on Brock Purdy, as well as a blocked field goal. Love’s captain status is even further confirmation that he will play this weekend after popping up on the injury report earlier this week.
Although Barner did not have his best game (only one reception for zero yards), he will look to rebound in Pittsburgh, which should be somewhat of a homecoming for him. Barner, the Aurora, Ohio native, grew up less than two hours north of Pittsburgh.
