Having made the Pittsburgh Steelers’ initial 53-man roster or practice squad, a handful of players switched their jersey digits on Monday. When fans sport fan favorite Yahya Black’s threads this season, they’ll have a No. 94 on their chest rather than No. 78.

Other gameday roster players to make a number change are guard Andrus Peat (No. 71) and defensive lineman Esezi Otomewo (No. 93). Practice squad players Trey Sermon, D’Shawn Jamsion and Max Hurleman will wear numbers 37, 38 and 84, respectively.

The most notable Steelers player to don No. 94 is Lawrence Timmons, who played linebacker for the team from 2007-16. Before him, linebacker Chad Brown wore the numeral (1993-96, 2006). Since Timmons, defensive linemen Tyson Alualu (2017-22), Armon Watts (2023) and Dean Lowry (2024) have called No. 94 their own.

Hurleman’s choice of No. 84 carries some weight in the Steel City. Four-time first-team Associated Press All-Pro Antonio Brown wore the number from 2010-18. Only Cordarelle Patterson has worn it in game action since.

Carnell Lake starred in Sermon’s No. 37 jersey from 1989-98. Lake was a first-team AP All-Pro in 1997. He finished seventh in the AP’s NFL MVP voting that season. The Green Bay Packers’ Brett Favre wound up earning the honor.

There hasn’t been a particularly huge standout to wear Otomewo’s No. 93. Nose tackle Joel Steed is the most noteworthy, having sported it from 1992-99. Linebacker Mark Robinson had owned it as of late, but he was included in the Steelers’ final roster cuts last week. He signed with the New England Patriots afterward.
