On the third offensive play of Friday night’s Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, wide receiver Xavier Worthy was quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ target on a third-and-6 from the Chiefs’ 28-yard line. The play called for Worthy and tight end Travis Kelce to cross underneath in order to clear out the coverage. But instead, Kelce ran into Worthy’s left shoulder, knocking him to the ground.

After being helped off the field, it appeared that Worthy might have suffered a dislocated shoulder; trainers could be seen trying to get it back into place. Then with a towel draped over his head, Worthy went to the locker room for X-rays. The team listed him as questionable to return with a shoulder injury.

This is the second consecutive year that the Chiefs have had a wide receiver sustain a shoulder injury early in the season. In 2024, Hollywood Brown suffered a shoulder injury on the first offensive play of the preseason opener. He missed almost all of the season. The extent of Worthy’s injury remains to be seen.
