PITTSBURGH — To err on the side of caution, Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense operated exclusively out of shotgun or pistol formations during last week’s decisive loss to the Buffalo Bills. The veteran quarterback has had another week for his fractured left wrist to heal, meaning offensive coordinator Arthur Smith might deploy different looks against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
“I don’t think we’re limited in any way,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday. “Certainly, we’re going to do some things a little bit different to accommodate present circumstances. … There will probably be less discussion this week. We’ll see as the week wears on. Certainly, I think (Aaron) came out of the game, at least physically from a wrist injury perspective, in a good place.”
Rodgers said him and Steelers head athletic trainer Gabriel Amponsah would “see what we can do” on Thursday. Rodgers added that the injury is starting to feel better.
“I’d love to be able to be under center,” Rodgers said. “That’ll probably be a later in the week decision. But, yeah, I didn’t come out of the game any worse for wear. … Healing process has continued, and we’ll see what happens as far as the type of cast I use come Sunday.”
Smith reiterated that the team has to make sure it’s protecting its 42-year-old signal-caller. Smith is still toying with ways to ensure Rodgers remains on the field and effective.
“Look, you just have contingency plans. If a guy is playing, you gotta adapt,” Smith said. “There are things we can do better in that formation stuff. We’ll see.”
