The Washington Commanders have missed out on adding a veteran wide receiver to their roster after they hosted the New York Giants for the season opener. Kendrick Bourne visited the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Commanders last week, but wasn’t going to sign with either team until after week 1. Adam Schefter is reporting that Bourne is returning to his former team, signing a 1-year deal with a max value of $5 million. GM Adam Peters was in the 49ers front office when Bourne was signed as an UDFA in 2017, but wasn’t able to get him to join the Commanders. Bourne signed with the New England Patriots in 2021, and spent the last four seasons there before requesting his release last month.
The Washington Commanders only kept 5 wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster, and there was speculation that they would go shopping after the rest of the league trimmed their personnel. Washington’s top three WRs going into the season were the newly-extended Terry McLaurin, a motivated Deebo Samuel Sr, and Noah Brown who was nursing another injury for the last month. Rookie Jaylin Lane and second-year WR Luke McCaffrey round out the room. The Commanders elevated Chris Moore from the practice squad and he made a clutch catch in yesterday’s win over the Giants.
