Recently, the Minnesota Vikings’ season came to an end without a playoff berth, a relative disappointment after their 2024 campaign resulted in 14 wins. This season was all about the future of the quarterback position, and unfortunately, Minnesota didn’t come away with a clear answer, as JJ McCarthy struggled through both poor play and injuries in his first year under center.
On Monday evening, the Pittsburgh Steelers joined Minnesota in the offseason with a home demolition at the hands of the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs, which many speculated might have been the final game of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ career. If it was, it wasn’t necessarily a virtuoso performance to go out on, as Rodgers and the Steelers’ offense managed to put just six points on the board.
Over the offseason, Rodgers was heavily linked to the Vikings before ultimately signing with the Steelers, allowing the Vikings to fully commit to McCarthy as their starter this year. However, with McCarthy struggling to both stay on the field and produce when he’s there, it’s certainly worth considering whether Minnesota might once again go after Rodgers this offseason, if he is open to playing another year.
While Monday’s game was not a great display, Rodgers showcased that he still has considerable arm talent and decision-making ability this year for the Steelers, using both of those attributes to help Pittsburgh knock off the Baltimore Ravens to get into the postseason to begin with.
Meanwhile, McCarthy has proven to be unreliable at best up to this point in his NFL career, and he could certainly benefit from the added pressure of having another big name next to him in the locker room, as well as the opportunity to learn from one of the greats.
Still, at this point, Rodgers has not spoken on what the future will hold for him in the NFL, if there is one at all.
