PITTSBURGH — A worker is in critical condition after falling from the scoreboard at Acrisure Stadium on Saturday while the building was getting ready to host the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football.

Pittsburgh police, fire and EMS responded to the stadium at around 10 p.m. last night for a male worker who had fallen approximately 50 feet from the top of the main scoreboard onto a catwalk below, suffering severe lower body injury.

Medics were able to lower him to the ground and he was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition as of Sunday morning.

The stadium was being changed over quickly, with work continuing late into the night after the Pitt Panthers hosted NC State on Saturday afternoon. That game kicked off at 3:30, with just 29 hours between the kickoff of that contest and the Steelers and Packers on Sunday Night Football.

In addition to the typical changeover of team graphics and signage, Sunday Night Football also uses significantly more and different types of camera mounts than a typical Pitt game, including the cable-suspended skycam.

Other workers were immediately going over the playing surface at Acrisure Stadium, which came under fire for its poor condition during the last Steelers home game. The field has since been re-sodded, with Pitt and NC State the first teams to play on the new surface, which is expected to last about a month.

Literally as the clock hit :00 of the @Pitt_FB v. @NStatefootball game, the crew of around 20 plus from the @AcrisureStadium grounds crews hit the playing surface to repair it and get it ready for tomorrow nights @steelers game. They were cutting it, blowing it, raking it and… pic.twitter.com/Nh0KfSfw1H

Serious incidents at the 24-year-old stadium have been rare. A Beaver County man was killed in a fatal fall from the top of an escalator near Gate C in 2022. In 2016, a Baldwin man suffered a head injury in a fight with a Dallas Cowboys fan and later died at his home.
