Danette Colbert has received a lengthy jail sentence following her arrest in connection with the death of Chiefs reporter Adan Manzano.
Colbert, known as the “Bourbon Street Hustler,” has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for an unrelated matter. She’s still facing charges of second-degree murder in the Manzano case.
The 48-year-old was arrested on February 7 after the journalist was found dead in a New Orleans hotel room during Super Bowl Week. Colbert had gone to Manzano’s room with him before he died and was caught using his credit cards to make purchases at stores in the area.
She had already been on probation after a suspended sentence following a conviction on theft and fraud charges.
Colbert is believed to have drugged Manzano, which led to his death. The reporter was in New Orleans to cover the Super Bowl game between the Chiefs and Eagles, but would not survive the trip.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill argued on Thursday that Colbert was a frequent offender and deserved a harsher sentence, given that she has several prior felony convictions.
“The evidence was overwhelming that this woman was a serial fraudster and took advantage of multiple tourists and innocent people over many years in the French Quarter,” Murrill said.
Colbert is said to have suffocated while lying face down on a pillow. He was found unresponsive on February 5 after colleagues called for a welfare check.
The toxicology process revealed that alcohol and Xanax were in his system.
Manzano was the father of an infant who is now orphaned, as his wife died in an accident around a year before he was killed.
