Travis Kelce, one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, has found himself at a career crossroads. Following the Kansas City Chiefs’ thrashing 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, speculation has grown regarding his potential retirement. At 35 years old and with 12 grueling seasons behind him, Kelce has openly admitted that he is taking time to assess his future.

Kelce’s 2024 season was one of the most challenging of his career. He finished the regular season with 97 receptions for 823 yards and just three touchdowns, the lowest touchdown total since his rookie year in 2013. As Travis Kelce acknowledged on his “New Heights” podcast, the Chiefs’ continued success has meant more games and more physical strain. “I’ve played more football than anybody over the past five, six years,” he admitted. “That’s a lot of wear and tear on your body. That process can be grueling. It can weigh on you. It can make you better, or it can drive you crazy.”
This wear and tear manifested on the field, as Kelce appeared sluggish at times. His renowned agility and route-running sharpness seemed to have diminished, leading to questions about whether he can still perform at an elite level. His struggles in the Super Bowl were particularly glaring, as the Eagles’ defense effectively neutralized him. The Kansas City Chiefs are not waiting indefinitely for Kelce’s decision. According to reports, the team has given him until March 14 to decide whether he will return for the 2025 season. This deadline fits with key financial dates in the NFL calendar. Kelce is due an $11.5 million roster bonus on March 15, and the league’s free agency period begins on March 10.
Though Kelce has not confirmed his decision, he has clarified that he will not rush into it. “I think I’m gonna take some time to figure it out,” he said on the podcast. “I owe it to my teammates that if I do come back, it’s a wholehearted decision.
