The Pittsburgh Steelers are 26-6 against rookie quarterbacks under Mike Tomlin. Will they continue this dominance against Cleveland?
The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing to face their 13 straight game schedule after an early bye week. To start, they face their divisional foe Cleveland Browns. Under head coach Mike Tomlin, the Steelers have dominated teams starting rookie quarterbacks.
Since Tomlin became head coach, the Steelers are an incredible 26-6 against rookie quarterbacks. Their most recent victory came after their bye week last year when they defeated the Washington Commanders. Additionally, their average margin of victory in those games is 11 points per game.
The Browns will be starting their rookie third-round quarterback, Dillon Gabriel, for the second consecutive week. Cleveland, of course, played Gabriel’s first career start in London last week. The loss sent the Browns to the bottom of the division at 1-4.
However, of those six losses under Tomlin, the Browns account for two of them. Most recently, and the last time they lost to a rookie, the Browns defeated the Steelers in 2023 with Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The other loss was in 2012 to Brandon Weeden. Both games were in Cleveland.
These Browns have a good defense like they did in 2023. They are an aggressive group that banks on intimidating offenses. Their offense, however, is not as strong. While Gabriel’s debut included two passing touchdowns, he also completed under 60% of his throws for less than 200 yards.
In divisional games, anything can happen. However, in games where the Browns started rookie quarterbacks in Pittsburgh, they are 3-0. It will be up to the Steelers to continue their dominance as they aim to stay ahead in the division race.
