New Steelers wide receiver Robert Woods reveals why he wanted to join Pittsburgh in free agency this offseason.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran wide receiver Robert Woods following the 2025 NFL Draft and he revealed why he chose the Steel City as the fifth stop in his NFL career.

“Obviously, coach Mike Tomlin is a great coach. I just wanted to play for him,” Woods said. “But not only him, the colors, the team, the history, and then being able to have an opportunity to showcase my talent. The receiver room, I feel like it’s open, being able to come out here and compete and play well. We want to push this team to get better, myself to get better and felt it was just a great opportunity to come here and be on the field.”

Woods does have a great opportunity to have an immediate impact, joining a very underwhelming wide receiver room that includes DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller, Ben Skowronek, Brandon Johnson, Lance McCutcheon and Roc Taylor.

The 33-year-old’s best days are behind him, but he is by far the most experienced player in the room with 683 catches for 8,233 yards and 38 touchdowns in the first 12 years of his professional career.

Woods was drafted by the Buffalo Bills before making stops in Los Angeles, Tennessee, and most recently, Houston. His best season to date was his 2018 campaign with the Rams where he recorded 86 receptions for a career-high 1,219 yards and six touchdowns.

Woods isn’t exactly sure what his role will be in Pittsburgh, but he plans on being on the field early and often, and in multiple facets of the game.

“On the field. Whatever that role is, I plan to be on the field, making plays, contributing first, second, third down, punt return, kick return,” Woods said. “Just being an open option for the team, for the quarterback. I want to play fast, play physical, everything I’ve been doing in my past, keep bringing the same thing.”
