The Patriots currently lead the AFC East with a 4-2 record, making them one of the top contenders in the NFL this season. Given New England’s surprising success, it will likely look for opportunities to bring in new talent at the trade deadline instead of offloading players.
One aspect New England must focus on improving is its wide receiver position. Former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski recently recommended that the team consider making a trade for Philadelphia Eagles receiver A.J. Brown.
“Another darkhorse everyone has been talking about is A.J. Brown, but that’s been news for a long time, going to the Patriots since he’s a long-time fan buying Julian Edelman and Tom Brady’s jerseys in the offseason,” Gronkowski said Wednesday on Fanduel’s “Up & Adams”.
Brown has expressed frustration with Philadelphia’s offense this season, despite the team’s Super Bowl win last season. However, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Eagles have no intention of trading the star receiver.
“The Eagles will continue to insist they have no plans to trade Brown, their star receiver,” Russini wrote on Saturday. “But every week that passes with problems piling up makes decision-makers around the league wonder.”
If the Eagles continue to struggle, they may seriously contemplate trading Brown. The Patriots should be ready to seize that opportunity. With $54 million in cap space still available this season, New England possesses both the financial flexibility and the draft capital to make a bold move for Brown.
