The New England Patriots are currently taking part in offseason workouts as they gear up for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. The Patriots are looking to build off the success of last year, which featured a trip to the Super Bowl, where they were demolished by the Seattle Seahawks.
Quarterback Drake Maye had an elite regular season but a brutal playoff run, and recently, NFL insider Albert Breer broke down why he thinks the quarterback is the X-factor for New England heading into this season.
“It would be weird to say that Drake Maye is an x-factor in the Patriots’ season, after a near-MVP campaign in his second year, but here’s a question to ponder: What if Maye finds another level in 2026? It’s something to consider, given Maye’s physical gifts and that he’ll be with the same play-caller in consecutive seasons for the first time since high school,” wrote Breer.
Indeed, many are expecting big things out of the former number three overall draft pick this year, and it will be interesting to see how Maye responds to playing a much tougher schedule than he got to face in 2025, which became a major talking point during the Patriots’ successful regular season.
The Patriots have made strides to give Maye some better weapons in the wide receiving room this year. While the team parted ways with Stefon Diggs, they went out and signed Romeo Doubs in free agency before trading for Philadelphia Eagles star AJ Brown, giving themselves a strong receiving duo to go with some of the solid players they already had in place.
Now, the pressure will be on Maye to prove that 2025 was not a one-off and to try to re-enter the MVP conversation for a second straight year.
