Why Panthers should be in ‘no rush’ to sign Bryce Young to contract extension

The Carolina Panthers are actively strengthening their offensive lineup ahead of the 2026-27 season. While expectations remain high for breakout wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan to have a significant year, the front office is committed to keeping Bryce Young’s receiving corps intact.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Panthers have agreed to a three-year, $35 million contract extension with 24-year-old wide receiver Jalen Coker. The deal, negotiated by agent Matt Glose, includes incentives that could increase the total value to $41 million.

By extending Coker, who was set to become an exclusive rights free agent this year and a restricted free agent next year, the Panthers ensure his presence during his prime years before he potentially enters the open market at age 27.

Despite securing his supporting cast, the franchise is taking a more measured approach regarding their quarterback’s financial future. ESPN’s Dan Graziano reports that Carolina is not in a rush to finalize a long-term extension for Young, even though they publicly express confidence in him as their franchise centerpiece.

The Panthers gained significant financial flexibility by exercising Young’s fifth-year option for the 2027 season at $25.904 million, meaning they will pay him a manageable total of $31.83 million over the next two years. Graziano notes that with the Houston Texans seemingly in no hurry to extend Young’s 2023 draft classmate C.J. Stroud, Carolina has valid reasons to wait for more on-field evidence before entering the market.

This patient strategy aligns with the straightforward perspective shared by general manager Dan Morgan back in May. Morgan provided an honest yet optimistic update, clarifying that internal contract discussions will continue with Young’s agent, but a formal agreement will only be reached at the right time.

The general manager emphasized that the front office prefers a cautious approach, while Young focuses on daily improvement and his growth as a leader.
