The Jets have released kicker Anders Carlson. Could the 49ers bring in more competition for Jake Moody?
About a month ago, the San Francisco 49ers signed kicker Greg Joseph to compete with the struggling Jake Moody.
Joseph attempted three field goals with the Washington Commanders in 2024, one with the New York Jets, and 16 attempts with the New York Giants. It’s safe to say that the best competition available for Moody isn’t a guy who played on three different teams last season.
On Wednesday morning, the Jets released Anders Carlson, who spent five games with the Jets last season, where he went 8-for-10, including 3-of-5 and 1-of-1 from 50+ yards last year. Do you remember who else Carlson kicked for in 2024? That’s right, the Niners.
Carlson made all five attempts, although he did miss one point after attempt. Still, he was perfect on both tries from 40+ and 50+. Special teams coordinator Brant Boyer has already put his fingerprints on some of the moves the team has made, including the addition of Joseph.
It’s evident that Carlson is an upgrade from Joseph and would do a better job of pushing Moody or making that a more competitive situation. So, will we see Carlson swapped out for Joseph ahead of training camp? There’s no rush for the 49ers to make a move. We’re about five or so weeks away from camp starting.
Statistically speaking, Carlson is leaps and bounds better and more consistent than Joseph, and not far off, if not in the same league, as Moody. Familiarity, price, and opportunity should be the determining factors for Carlson.
