New England Patriots - NESN.com
The NFL regular season is officially in the books. For months, fans and media members have argued over which quarterback deserves the NFL MVP award this year: New England Patriots QB Drake Maye or Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford.
Maye has the edge in most categories, but his detractors point out that he faced an easier schedule than Stafford.
While Stafford’s season was incredible and MVP-caliber, Maye’s was historic.
For starters, he finished with the sixth-best completion rate (71.95%) in NFL history. It’s also a Patriots record, ahead of some guy named Tom Brady.
Maye also had the 13th-best passer rating ever at 113.5. His 77.2 QBR ranks 24th all-time, while his 8.9 passing yards per attempt ranks 36th all-time.
Those are insane numbers, especially for a 23-year-old in his second season. They’re also better than the ones Stafford has posted in any year of his career, including this one.
Maye was simply better than Stafford this season despite having a worse supporting cast and not getting to play half his games in a dome. He won more games, performed better against common opponents and recorded better stats, making a compelling MVP case with a historically great and superior season.
