New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson struggled in the team’s 21-14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite Stevenson’s shaky performance, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels still trusts his running back.

“I’ve always had a lot of confidence in Rhamondre Stevenson,” McDaniels said Thursday. “I was here when we had the opportunity to draft him. I think Rhamondre cares a lot about doing the right things, and I have confidence in all our players. I see what they do to prepare and try to help us win.”

Stevenson fumbled twice Sunday, including once at the goal line while New England tried to tie the game at the start of the second half.

New England’s running back situation isn’t looking great right now. Steveson has struggled to hold onto the ball, while Antonio Gibson also coughed it up last Sunday. Meanwhile, TreVeyon Henderson has managed just 19 carries for 65 yards over the past three games.

New England will still need to rely on Stevenson for the rest of the season because Gibson and Henderson cannot carry the workload on their own.

Since the Panthers allow an average of 137.7 rushing yards per game this season, Stevenson could find a chance to boost his confidence.
