Relax
You might have seen that the Jets placed defensive end Jermaine Johnson on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list to start training camp.
You might be wondering what this means.
Some players aren’t ready to practice at the start of training camp because they are rehabbing from injuries suffered the previous year. Johnson is among them.
Is this cause for concern? No, it is not.
During training camp, a player can come off the PUP list as soon as he is healthy to practice. Last month, head coach Aaron Glenn indicated that Johnson could begin training camp on the PUP list but that the team is expecting him to be ready for Week 1. The opening game of the regular season is September 7. That is plenty of time for Johnson to get up to speed.
The PUP list is an oddity of NFL training camp. Players who aren’t ready to participate in the first practice go on it. However, if a player was to get injured during that first practice and miss the second practice, there is no list to join.
Now if a player remains on the PUP list at the start of the regular season, that is a different story. Anybody on the list at that point must miss at least the first four weeks of the regular season. That is because during the regular season, players on the PUP list don’t take up one of the 53 spots on the active roster.
That doesn’t sound like it will happen with Johnson.
