The New England Patriots have had a busy offseason, adding immense depth to their wide receiver room by trading for AJ Brown and signing Romeo Doubs in free agency, among other moves. Although the team did part ways with Stefon Diggs, they still seem to have upgraded in that department heading into next season.

Recently, legendary Patriots receiver Troy Brown, who was with the team from the early 1990s to late 2000s, spoke on the depth that New England has stockpiled at the wide receiver position.

“Seven is a nice number when all the guys can play. When you have a room like that, most of the good ones know when they come in for training camp they have to turn it up. So, it could create a whole another beast in that room,” Brown said, per Mike Reiss of ESPN.

Here, Brown is referencing Doubs and AJ Brown, along with Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, DeMario “Pop” Douglas and Efton Chism III.

He also spoke on the competitive element of all of these players competing for a limited number of spots in the rotation.

“The intensity of the competition in the room, it’s going to make that group better players at the end of camp, and you’re giving Drake Maye — who I think is a very, very good quarterback — an opportunity to spread the ball around to good players,” he said.

The Patriots will be tested this year in multiple ways, as they will no longer have the benefit of a historically easy schedule or the ability to “creep up” on teams who underestimate them, now on the heels of a Super Bowl run.

New England will start its season in early September with a Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks on the road.
