Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it’s why the defense went back to a Cover 3-based scheme against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, after running two-high safety looks successfully the last few weeks.

The Bears run the ball a lot and also play with two tight ends, necessitating additional coverage in the middle of the field, and not double covering the outside receivers as Teryl Austin’s unit had been doing.

That works in principle, but the Bears were able to attack the weaknesses in the Pittsburgh scheme, and Austin and company never adjusted. Alan breaks it down.
