On Chris Simms Unbuttoned, Chris Simms revealed that he texted Aaron Donald personally to ask if AD had any plans to come back to the Los Angeles Rams for the 2026 season? Simms reports Donald said that he didn’t know if he’d be coming back (or not) as Donald continues to figure out how he wants to move forward. For Simms, that was all he needed to hear because if AD still isn’t sure whether or not he will be suiting up for the 2026 season, then he more likely than not shouldn’t be suiting up for the Rams.
Said Simms on his text exchange with Donald:
“We got into it a little bit. I plain out asked, ‘So what do you think? You think you’re gonna give it a shot?‘. And I don’t think he’ll have any problem with me sharing this. He said, ‘Honestly, I don’t know, yet’…I’ll tell you in full transparency as a guy who likes him as a human, as a friend, I told him, ‘If you don’t know yet, then you probably shouldn’t do it‘. That was my advice to him.”
Simms goes on to say that he doesn’t doubt Donald, he says multiple times he views Donald as one of the greatest players to ever grace the NFL, but for Simms, it’s July going on August. The season will be here at warp speed, and a player should not be unsure about whether or not they want to play in July.
Simms has fair points, BUT there is a flaw in his logic. A flaw I think he would admit to, and that’s that Simms is not Aaron Donald.
Whereas it makes total sense for Simms to want to hear Donald say “Yes, I’m in.” Donald doesn’t have to say that in July, he may not have to say he’s ready in August, there is no open timeline that has been presented for when AD needs to make a decision. Donald can seemingly decide at his own pace.
Also, if Donald did know his intentions, would he share those details with Simms before anyone else like his family or the Rams? Food for thought.
Now, what makes this story a bit more fun than some others is we aren’t speculating about pending legal charges, a major offseason injury or health concerns. We are talking about a future Hall of Famer who MAY decide he wants to unretire to play with another future Hall of Famer in Myles Garrett. It’s fun, it’s exciting and this story isn’t hurting anyone.
But if you listen to Simms, it may be more fun for AD to stay on the couch, rather than come back to a situation Donald may not be ready for.
