The situation between Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers has been an utter fiasco throughout the entire offseason. While Aiyuk clearly does not want to be part of the team anymore, the franchise has yet to grant his wishes and release him. Even though the club is expected to let him go at some point.

Ultimately, it’s a confusing situation, especially on Aiyuk’s part. At least that’s what Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated admitted while answering questions in his latest mailbag. Breer ponders why the 28-year-old wide receiver didn’t just show up to OTAs and essentially force the 49ers to release him.

“I’d think, on the surface, that the 49ers would cut [Brandon Aiyuk] the minute he reports to the facility, not wanting to have him around, which is why it’s sort of confusing to me that he didn’t just show up in the spring and force them to do it then,” wrote Breer. “I suppose San Francisco could suspend him and drag this thing out. But I don’t know that you’d want to do that if you’re Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch, and you’re trying to get camp off on the right foot.”

The five-year veteran has been adamant about wanting to be released. Throughout the offseason, Brandon Aiyuk has trolled the 49ers for giving him the four-year $120 million contract extension in August 2024. He’s even called the organization out for voiding his roughly $27 million of guaranteed money for the 2026-27 campaign.

While Aiyuk awaits to finally be released, there is only one team he has his sights set on to play for next season. The Washington Commanders. He’s played with Jayden Daniels once before in college and has a connection with general manager Adam Peters, who worked for the 49ers’ front office from 2017 to 2023.
