Philadelphia Eagles fans should be celebrating their Super Bowl LIX victory, but tragedy has cast a shadow over the moment. Two people were shot near the Eagles’ victory parade in Philadelphia’s Spring Garden neighborhood. While details are still emerging, this incident eerily reminds us of what happened exactly one year ago at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII parade- an event that turned into chaos when gunfire erupted, wounding dozens and killing one person.
On February 14, 2024, a mass shooting took place during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade. The violence broke out just after the parade rally ended at around 2 p.m. near Union Station. Chiefs players and staff were inside the building when shots rang out, and they sheltered in place. Fortunately, none of them were harmed, but for many fans in attendance, the day turned into a nightmare.

In total, 33 people were injured. Among them, 22 suffered gunshot wounds, including 11 children between the ages of six and 15. The only fatality was Lisa Lopez Galvan, a local radio DJ for KKFI, who was killed by a gunshot wound at the scene. An additional 18 people were treated for non-gunshot injuries, including those hurt by ricocheting bullets and the chaos of the crowd stampede.
Initially, three juveniles were detained, two of whom were armed. However, one was later released after police determined they were not involved. The remaining two juveniles faced gun-related charges, including resisting arrest.
Later, two adult men were arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting. In March, three other adults were charged for illegally obtaining and trafficking firearms used in the shooting. One of them, Dominic Miller, was indicted on four felony charges. An autopsy confirmed that the bullet that killed Lisa Lopez Galvan came from Miller’s gun.
Kansas City police concluded that the shooting was the result of a dispute among several people and was not an act of terrorism.
