After spending the last 5 seasons as an offensive coordinator, Moore has just become the youngest head coach in the NFL.
On Tuesday, the New Orleans Saints announced that Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore would be coming the team’s new head coach. Yes, he literally had just won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles, but outside of that, how much do Saints fans really know about the man who will hopefully lead the team back into their winning ways?
The 36-year-old was born in Prosser, Washington, and has coaching in his blood. He attended Prosser High School, where his father, Tom, was the head coach from 1986 to 2008, winning 21 league titles and 4 state championships. Playing at quarterback, Moore set Washington State career records for completions (787) and touchdown passes (173), setting state single-season records for completions (317 junior year), yards (4,600 junior year), and touchdown passes (67 senior year).
Moore attended Boise State from 2007 to 2011. In 2008, he was named WAC Freshman of the Year and Second-team All-conference, Phil Steele Second-team All-WAC, and FWAA’s freshman All-America team. In 2009, he was named First-team All-American by CBS Sportsline, First-team All-WAC, and the WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2009. He also finished 7th in Heisman voting and was named one of ten finalists for the Manning Award.
In 2010, Moore was named a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, the Manning Award, and the Maxwell Award, as well as the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first-ever Boise State player to be a Heisman finalist. Moore was named the Touchdown Club of Columbus Quarterback of the Year.
In 2011, he was one of three finalists for the Maxwell Award. For the second year in a row, Moore was named the Touchdown Club of Columbus Quarterback of the Year. Which in 2012 was renamed the Kellen Moore Award.
Moore finished his college football career with a 50-3 record, throwing for 14,667 yards, 142 TDs, and 28 INTs, becoming the first quarterback in FBS history to win 50 games in his career.
In 2013, Moore was signed by the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent, where he spent 3 seasons before heading to the Dallas Cowboys.
He got his first NFL start in 2015 with Dallas. In Week 17 against the Washington Redskins, Moore threw for 435 yards, 3 TDs, and 2 INTs. Moore became the fifth quarterback in franchise history to throw for 400 or more yards in a single game and the sixth-most passing yards in team history in a single game.
In 2018, Moore retired from the NFL and immediately moved on to his coaching career, where he became the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach. In January 2019, he was promoted to offensive coordinator.
In January 2023, Moore was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers.
