The Kansas City Chiefs need to get their swagger back during the 2026 season. Kansas City went 6-11 in 2025 after losing Patrick Mahomes to an ACL injury late in the season. The Chiefs are about to get another offensive player back in the fold very soon after sone off-the-field drama.
Rice is scheduled to be released from jail on Tuesday, June 16th per Sam Zeff of KCUR.
The star wide receiver missed all of Kansas City’s OTAs as well as mandatory minicamp. He was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail after testing positive for THC and thereby violating the terms of his probation.
Rice was on probation as part of the terms of his plea agreement and settlements stemming from his reckless driving incident from over two years ago.
Rice also underwent a clean-up surgery on his right knee just one week before heading off to jail, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The surgery was needed to “remove loose debris” that was causing inflammation in his knee.
Schefter noted at the time that Rice was expected to be sidelined for two months. Half of that recovery time was spent in jail, leaving him with another month of recovery to go.
The Chiefs will kick off their training camp in late July, which conveniently coincides with when Rice should be completely rehabbed. But that does not mean he’ll be up to full speed right away.
Rice was a big part of Kansas City’s offense in 2025, logging 53 receptions for 571 receiving yards and five touchdowns. The hope is that Rice can put all of the off-the-field issues behind himself and get back to playing football.
Chiefs fans should keep an eye on how much Rice is able to participate during training camp later this summer.
