While Sean McVay wouldn’t confirm interest in Jalen Ramsey, the head coach isn’t ruling it out either
The Los Angeles Rams aren’t actively seeking out a trade for Jalen Ramsey right now, but that could change as early as next week when the Miami Dolphins are expected to open the window for a relocation. By all accounts, the Dolphins and Ramsey have no avenue towards another season together — Ramsey wants out, the Dolphins are happy to oblige him — and the only thing that could stop a trade would be an outright release.
The Rams have been the team that is linked to Ramsey the most often, but Sean McVay told the media on Wednesday that there hasn’t been any “dialogue” about making a trade for the cornerback any time soon. However, the head coach added that stuff like that “can always change pretty quickly”.
The realistic date to mark on the calendar for any Jalen Ramsey trade would be June 1st.
If the Dolphins wait to trade or cut Ramsey until after June 1st, then the amount of dead money on Miami’s salary cap for 2025 goes down from $25 million to just under $7 million.
McVay was happy to endorse Ramsey as a player, even if not confirming that the Rams would be interested in trading for a cornerback who is over 30 and owed a lot of money if he’s kept on the team beyond next season.
“Obviously, we love Jalen,” McVay said. “We know him intimately. There would be some things that we would need to be able to do if that was the direction we went.”
Essentially, any team that trades for Ramsey is probably going to make him a cap casualty in 2026 or ask him to take a pay cut if he wants to avoid being released. Ramsey has a $5 million guarantee and a roster bonus if he’s on the roster on March 15, 2026.
There’s nothing about Jalen Ramsey at this stage of his career that makes him seem like a slam dunk addition to a secondary, even with the Rams. It’s to the point where you have to wonder if the Dolphins will even find a taker and if they do, whether they will get more than a sixth or seventh round pick in return.
If the price is right though, the L.A. Rams seem like they’ll be down to spin.
