The Detroit Lions are suddenly in a tricky situation with Terrion Arnold. Detroit’s former first-round pick faces multiple charges related to a kidnapping plot that could result in life in prison. One important upcoming date in the legal process could already cause plenty of problems for Arnold.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter explained that Monday’s pre-trial hearing could have significant consequences for Arnold as the legal process kicks into motion.
“A hearing will be held Monday morning in Tampa to determine whether Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold will be held in custody, pending his trial,” Schefter wrote on Sunday. “Arnold faces four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery, which carry a potential sentence of up to life in prison if convicted. Court filings confirm Arnold has retained noted Denver attorney Harvey Steinberg to represent him in this case.”
If Arnold is held in custody, it could put his ability to play in 2026 in question. Arnold could be forced to lose millions of dollars in what could be the end of his NFL career.
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk broke down just how much Arnold stands to lose if Monday’s pre-trial hearing does not go his way.
“The slotted first-round contract he signed in 2024 has a total value of $13.343 million,” Florio wrote. “He’s due to make $2.098 million in 2026 and $2.75 million in 2027.”
Arnold already received a $7.251 million signing bonus for his rookie contract. Florio argued that Detroit could recover half that amount if Arnold is unavailable over the next two seasons. If Arnold does not play at all in 2026, he would owe $1.812 million.
Florio added that Detroit would keep Arnold on the roster if they want to collect that money. If the Lions release Arnold, they give up their right to claw that signing bonus back.
If Arnold’s pre-trial hearing goes poorly, then his NFL career will immediately be seriously in danger.
