With free agency just a few weeks away, will the Pittsburgh Steelers be able to afford re-signing QB Justin Fields?
Steelers insider Gerry Dulac originally reported that a potential Fields contract would be in the range of $15 million per year for two years.
More recently, Steelers writer Mark Kaboly argued that Fields could make more money elsewhere if he chooses to leave the Steel City.
According to Spotrac, one of the leading resources in sports contracts and finance, Fields’ calculated value falls well under these predictions, hovering around $6 million per year. Spotrac compared Fields to other backup QB contracts, such as Marcus Mariota, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Davis Mills, who make between $3 million and $6 million annually.
One could argue that this data fails to account for the fact that Fields is expected to be a starting quarterback in the 2025 season, which may explain why his projected value is significantly lower than Dulac’s estimate.
If Fields were to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers as a starter in 2025, a two-year, $15 million annual salary seems like a baseline offer, which could rise to $20–$25 million per year depending on the interest he generates from other NFL organizations.
