The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday, just two days after their AFC Championship victory, that they will be wearing their white jerseys for Super Bowl LIX. This follows the trend of recent champions opting for white, as 16 of the last 20 Super Bowl winners have worn white jerseys.
Kansas City last wore white in the Super Bowl two years ago, when they defeated the Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII. Before that, they wore white in Super Bowl LIV, when they took down the San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs have had success in white on the biggest stage.

As the designated home team, the Eagles had the choice of jersey color and decided to go with their traditional green home uniforms. The NFC and AFC alternate the home designation each year, and this time, it’s Philadelphia’s turn.
This decision may bring mixed emotions for Eagles fans. The last time they wore green in a Super Bowl was just two years ago, in their heartbreaking 38-35 loss to the Chiefs. However, they also wore green in Super Bowl LII, when they famously defeated the New England Patriots for their first championship.

Recent Super Bowl history favors teams wearing white. Since Super Bowl XXXIX, white-jersey teams have won 16 of the last 20 Super Bowls. That’s an 80% success rate for teams in white, making the Chiefs’ choice a potentially strategic one.
Over the last decade, the only teams to win a Super Bowl while wearing non-white jerseys were the Eagles in Super Bowl LII and the Chiefs in Super Bowls LIV and LVIII. That means both of this year’s Super Bowl contenders have already defied this trend in the past. Can one of them do it again?
Each Super Bowl is played at a neutral site, but the home and away designations still matter. The conference that serves as the home team alternates each year, and this season, it’s the NFC’s turn. That gave the Eagles the first choice of uniform color.
