San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones earned one of the escalators in his contract after helping the team win on Sunday Night against the Atlanta Falcons. Jones made $400,000 since that was his fourth win of the season.

Jones can continue to earn more incentives, so long as he remains on the field. Of course, the 49ers want Brock Purdy, their long-term investment, to play. But winning isn’t easy in the NFL. Jones has allowed Purdy to be patient with his toe injury and let that fully heal.

Jones will earn an extra $100,000 as long as he plays 25 percent of the snaps and the 49ers win. Additionally, Jones can make $550,000 if he winds up playing half of the snaps this season and the 49ers make the playoffs.

Two weeks ago, Adam Schefter downplayed any potential quarterback controversy after the Niners beat the Rams:

‘No, I still think it is absolutely Brock Purdy’s job. I don’t think it’s a question. Mac Jones did say the right things because that’s the real situation right now ,where he’s going to be in a situation where he’s called upon when Brock’s not playing, and he’ll step in and play the way he did. He has a two-year contract. He’s going to be there for a couple of years, unless all of the sudden he’s got value, but Brock Purdy they just paid and he’s going to be the guy.”

During Sunday night’s broadcast, sideline reporter Melissa Stark said Brock Purdy told her how “annoying” his injury is:

“Turf toe may not sound like much, but it can be debilitating. There are varying degrees for Brock. He hyperextended his right big toe in Week 1, tearing the stabilizing ligaments under the joint. In addition to being extremely painful, turf toe limits the toe’s ability to flex, and Brock told me any movement in the wrong direction can set him back. He said he is truly day to day. There is no timeline for his return. He called this injury ‘so annoying,’ saying he’s never dealt with something that lingers this long.”

The 49ers travel to Houston next to take on the Texans. Unless Kyle Shanahan provides an update about Purdy on Monday, we won’t know about his status until the team returns to practice on Wednesday. We are coming up on a month since the last time Purdy played, which falls in line with his initial 2-to-5 week diagnosis.
