Tyreek Hill is one of the rare talents the NFL has ever seen. The Miami Dolphins wide receiver can leave defenders in the dust, post stunning stats, and make plays that seem straight out of a video game. But while his skills on the field are undeniable, his career off the field has been anything but smooth.
From allegations of domestic violence and child abuse to run-ins with the police and lawsuits, Hill’s journey through the NFL has been filled with controversies that constantly threaten to overshadow his talent. Let’s look at the bumps along the road that have shaped- and troubled- Hill’s career.
Tyreek Hill’s troubles began during his college days at Oklahoma State in 2014. Crystal Espinal, Hill’s then-girlfriend and pregnant with his child, accused him of choking her, punching her in the stomach, and striking her in the face during an argument. Hill was arrested and charged with felony domestic assault and battery by strangulation.
Oklahoma State swiftly dismissed him from its football and track programs. In 2015, Hill pleaded guilty and received three years probation, requiring anger management, a 52-week Batterer’s Intervention Program, and over $1,000 in fines. Despite the conviction, Hill returned to football at West Alabama in 2015 before entering the 2016 NFL Draft.
Tyreek Hill’s 2014 domestic violence case significantly impacted his draft stock. Many teams avoided him, but the Kansas City Chiefs took a chance on him in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. The decision drew public backlash, prompting the Chiefs to assure fans they had “vetted” Hill.
Hill acknowledged the criticism, saying, “The fans have every right to be mad at me. I did something wrong… but I’m fixing to come back, be a better man.” He quickly became a star, earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors early in his career. However, off-field issues continued to plague him.
In 2019, Tyreek Hill faced allegations of child abuse involving his three-year-old son, who had a broken arm. Hill and Espinal, now his fiancee, temporarily lost custody of their son during the investigation. The Johnson County District Attorney declined to file charges, stating they couldn’t determine who was responsible.

During the investigation, a recording surfaced of Hill and Espinal discussing the incident. Hill said, “You need to be terrified of me too, dumb b—.” The Chiefs suspended him indefinitely, but the NFL imposed no further discipline, citing insufficient evidence to prove he violated the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.
