In the 1998 NFL Draft, Ryan Leaf was selected No. 2 overall by the San Diego Chargers, immediately after quarterback Peyton Manning, placing enormous expectations on his shoulders.

Leaf signed a lucrative contract and envisioned a long career filled with championships and success. Instead, his professional career never lived up to those early hopes, and the fallout became one of the most infamous examples of unfulfilled promise in NFL history.
As a top prospect from Washington State University, Leaf was expected to become a franchise quarterback in the NFL. The Chargers invested heavily in him, giving up future picks and paying him a multi-million-dollar rookie contract.
However, Leaf’s NFL career never matched his college success. Over four seasons, he appeared in just 25 games, recording 3,666 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions, with a career passer rating that reflected his struggles on the field.
Ryan Leaf’s difficulties didn’t end on the field. After retirement, he became entangled in serious personal and legal issues, largely tied to opioid addiction following multiple surgeries from his football career.

His addiction eventually led to repeated legal problems, including felony charges for obtaining controlled substances and the theft of painkillers. These incidents culminated in a lengthy prison term in Montana starting in 2012.
Ryan Leaf’s story is a powerful mix of unrealized potential, personal struggle, and redemption. Once a top draft pick destined for greatness, his NFL career faltered amid performance struggles and off-field issues. These setbacks led to addiction and legal trouble.
