Some clarification from the Bears’ offensive coordinator on what exactly happened on the play.
Do you remember that incomplete pass from Caleb Williams to Rome Odunze last Thursday night over the middle of the field where it looked like the two rookies weren’t on the same page?
It was one of a few mistakes the Chicago Bears made that night, but with the Seattle Seahawks winning by a slim 6-3 final score, that one play could have been a momentum-builder.
Free agent beat reporter Nicholas Moreano, who previously worked with CHGO, asked Bears’ interim offensive coordinator Chris Beatty what happened on the play, and Beatty confirmed there was a miscommunication.
“Yeah, that is exactly what it was, and Rome saw the window. Caleb was right,” Beatty said. “You know, Rome should’ve stayed on the move and been a second-window throw, but Rome kind of felt like, ‘Hey, I’m going to sit in this first window,’ cause he felt like he was open there.”
The speculation by many in the moment was that either Caleb or Rome read something wrong, and Beatty, who was the wide receivers coach before getting the bump to O.C., put it on Odunze.
“But I always tell our guys we have to see it like the quarterback would see it, right? So if he doesn’t necessarily sit back and see that window, if you can’t see him, then he probably can’t see you. So you need to keep going to the next window, and even though we can’t anticipate, ‘Oh, it’s going to be a layered throw or whatever.’ So, completely our fault. But it was one of those deals, (and) that’s exactly what happened.”
There have been several plays this season just like this, so let’s hope the experience gained this year from Caleb, Rome, and the other returning receivers will benefit the team in 2025.
