The Philadelphia Eagles’ return to the Super Bowl in 2025 has bettors everywhere talking about an octopus.
No, this is not a real octopus. It’s a not a nickname for a player (or at least not a player in this game), either.
It’s a very specific type of novelty bet that typically only becomes available for the Super Bowl at most sportsbooks. And when you break it down, it’s pretty easy to understand.
An octopus wager is a bet that a player will score a touchdown and then the same player will immediately score a two-point conversion after. A touchdown is worth six points. Add another two points and you get eight — the amount of limbs on an octopus.
The bet is typically offered as a “yes or no” option and covers players on both teams with “yes” having much longer odds. It’s important to remember than in order for the bet to hit, the same player must score the touchdown AND the two-point conversion immediately after.
At BetMGM, you can bet there will be an octopus at 14-1 odds (No octopus has -5000 odds).
Remember: If Patrick Mahomes runs in a touchdown and throws a two-point conversion pass to Travis Kelce, the Chiefs will earn eight points, but that’s not considered an octopus since two different players secured the ball in the end zone. Likewise, if Mahomes runs in a touchdown and scampers in for two-point conversion much later in the game, it won’t count as an octopus.
So why are Super Bowl bettors so excited? Because Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts actually scored an octopus in the 2023 Super Bowl and cost sportsbooks oodles of money.
Obviously this is no way means Hurts will do it again, but with two mobile quarterbacks in this game — and both team’s penchant for trick plays — bettors clearly like their very small chances.
