The preseason is over and the Washington Commanders now shift their focus completely to the regular season opener against the New York Giants. They are coming off a dream season that saw No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels lead his recalibrated team to the NFC Championship game, getting one game away from the Super Bowl. That performance earned Daniels NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, and set future expectations sky-high. It seemed that Adam Peters was also feeling some of those elevated goals when he traded for a veteran LT (Laremy Tunsil) and WR (Deebo Samuel), but he’s still only in the second year of rebuilding the team that Ron Rivera left in disrepair.
The Washington Commanders Over/Under for the season is 9.5 wins per FanDuel, which puts them on the cusp of wildcard qualification for the playoffs. They went 12-5 last season, but a lot of people outside of the Commanders fan base are waiting (and hoping) for them to regress after a season they considered to be lucky. Dan Quinn is leading the charge to keep the team focused, not letting past success cloud their perspective going into a new season with even more new players.
Washington’s defense was not championship caliber last season, and that led to more personnel changes this year. The run defense was addressed with some big bodies up front, and the secondary got some help in the 2nd round in back-to-back drafts, along with the trade for Marshon Lattimore at last season’s trade deadline.
Were the changes the team made this offseason enough to get to the next level, and how many wins will the Washington Commanders have this season?
