When I started to collect my thoughts for this article on Stefon Diggs, I realized it probably wouldn’t be popular with a large number of Buffalo Bills fans. That’s completely understood, as the tension around Diggs and his relationship with the Bills became a daily story before he was traded to the Houston Texans during the 2024 offseason.
Despite the “divorce” between Diggs and the Bills, I choose to welcome him back to Buffalo for Sunday night’s game against the New England Patriots. About his return, Diggs told Boston.com that “(t)o me, obviously, it’s a little sentimental. I spent a lot of time there” and that returning will “be a little bit emotional.”
While things certainly did not end well for Diggs in Buffalo, I can’t help but look at the positives that Diggs brought to the club. When he arrived in 2020 he helped catapult the Bills’ offense into another stratosphere, as his rapport with quarterback Josh Allen was evident immediately that season. Diggs led the team with 127 receptions for 1,535 yards, and Buffalo’s offense reminded us of the Super Bowl-era Bills. I don’t give all of the credit to Diggs for the team’s resurgence, but it’s certainly more that just a coincidence.
I know his four seasons in Buffalo weren’t always perfect, but I prefer to be thankful for what Diggs did for the Bills. After being torched by the Patriots for so many years, it was a memorable night when Diggs torched them on Monday Night Football for 145 yards and three touchdowns. In another special moment against New England, it was Diggs who “politely” told some Patriots fans to “be quiet” after scoring a touchdown in Foxborough, MA. Diggs also had a soft spot for young Bills fans, often connecting and playing catch with them prior to games.
Again, I fully understand that things were far from perfect with Diggs in Buffalo, but I hope that Bills Mafia will welcome him back to Highmark Stadium properly in what should be an emotional moment on Sunday prior to the game. I should also note that after receiving a welcome from the fans, I hope the Bills shut out the Patriots, and that Diggs goes without a catch. Enjoy the game on Sunday, and go Bills!
