While the Las Vegas Raiders got embarrassed 40-6 by the Indianapolis Colts, let’s check in and see how Week 5 fared for a few old friends: Robert Spillane, Davante Adams and Jack Jones.
The Buffalo Bills walked into Sunday Night Football as the last remaining undefeated team in the NFL this season, but didn’t leave with their record intact as the New England Patriots pulled off a major upset. Not only did Spillane tie for the team lead in tackles, but he also helped get the scoring going by forcing a fumble at the end of the first quarter in the Bills’ territory. That led to a field goal, giving New England the early momentum to win its second game in a row. Clearly, this isn’t the same Patriots team that lost to the Raiders in the season opener, and Spillane turning his performance around over the last few weeks is part of the reason.
While Adams didn’t find the end zone on Thursday night, he did manage to be the Los Angeles Rams’ leading receiver and pull his total up to 357 yards on the year. However, the bigger story here is that Sean McVay just can’t beat his mentor, Kyle Shanahan. Despite the San Francisco 49ers playing significantly short-handed, McVay’s and Adams’ efforts weren’t enough, as Shanahan and the 49ers pulled off the upset in overtime. That gave San Francisco the early lead in the NFC West and the upper hand in the season series over Los Angeles.
This game between the Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers was a wild one. The Dolphins jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter but crumbled right before halftime, allowing the Panthers to make it a one-possession contest heading into the locker room. Miami’s collapse continued in the second half, and a terrible pass interfernce penalty by Jones was part of the problem. Coincidentally, he was guarding former Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, and the flag turned what could have been a failed third-down conversion to give the Dolphins the ball back into the game-sealing first down.
