PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are rounding into health for the start of the regular season, but there is one key player that is still questionable for his participation in Week 1 against the New York Jets: outside linebacker Nick Herbig.

Herbig suffered a hamstring injury in one of a handful of snaps during the Steelers’ Week 2 preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has yet to return to practice, but is hoping that he’ll be able to do so and get back up to speed in time to make the trip to new York.

“I’m just taking it day by day,” Herbig said after practice on Monday. “We’ll see how I feel. … “I feel like I have a great plan with Gabe [Amponsah], our head trainer. I think I’m progressing every day and just keep stacking days.”

Herbig will have one more chance to return to practice this week, when the team re-convenes on Wednesday, and they will have three more sessions next week. Hamstring injuries are notoriously easy to re-injure, so it’s important for Herbig to stick to the plan and not to be in a big rush to get back.

“I’m just getting movement in: treatment, rehab, taking care of everything else, making sure I’m as ready as I can possibly be,” Herbig said.

Herbig also dealt with a hamstring injury last season that cost him four games, so he’s relieved that this one seems that it will at most cost him one game.

“Any time you get injured, it’s frustrating, but it’s a part of the game, man. It happens, unfortunately enough. It didn’t happen mid-season, so I have some time to recover, take care of my body and hopefully, be ready for Week 1.”
