Wednesday Cheese Curds: Packers’ defense bolstered by young prospects

There are tons of different trite and cliche sayings communicating this exact point, but it’s the players that make NFL teams go ‘round, not the schemes or plays.

Year one of the Jeff Hafley era was great, and his scheme is no doubt good and innovative, but the real story on defense is that the players were better, particularly in the secondary, especially at safety.

If the second year of Hafley’s tenure is going to be equally as impressive, it’s going to be for similar reasons, and there’s good reason to think the trend will continue. The Packers’ safety room didn’t get any worse this offseason, and there are several young defenders that figure to make a big impact on the Packers’ this year.

Edgerrin Cooper is the obvious choice, but Evan Williams and Javon Bullard will both have significant roles to play this season, to say nothing of what 2025 draft picks Barryn Sorrell and Collin Oliver could offer.

But make no mistake, it’s the players that will make the difference. Players will cover up a lot of deficiencies in a bad scheme, but they’ll also make a good scheme really sing. We know that Hafley has a sharp mind and is well-regarded around the NFL. Now it’s time for the Packers’ defenders to make the difference.
