The Packers head coach had a lot to say this week.
This season, Matt LaFleur will tie Mike Holmgren as the fourth longest-tenured coach in Packers history. The only three ahead of him still occupy significant portions of real estate in Green Bay: Curly Lambeau, Vince Lombardi, and Mike McCarthy all made their marks on the Packers in indelible ways.
Holmgren, of course, left Green Bay after his seventh season, but there’s no indication LaFleur will make a similar exit. That will leave him in the unenviable position of being the longest-tenured Packers coach not to win a title.
LaFleur’s unfortunate legacy to this point is one of coming up short. Twice his teams were on the doorstep of a Super Bowl berth and came away empty, and a third time he had the top seed in the NFC playoffs and failed to win a game. If you are what your record says you are, LaFleur’s record in those situations doesn’t say much in his favor.
Heading into his seventh season, LaFleur’s aligns closely with Brian Gutekunst’s. Together they’ve now had most of a decade to assemble the exact team they want. Only Kenny Clark pre-dates Gutekunst’s ascension to the GM gig, and only Jaire Alexander pre-dates LaFleur’s arrival as head coach. This team is theirs, through and through — the full embodiment of their shared vision.
Will that vision ever result in a championship?
LaFleur had a lot on his mind at this year’s annual meeting.
If the Vikings landed Rodgers, would he be any better than the third-best quarterback in the NFC North? I kind of think not.
Gutekunst’s answer comes across a bit “urgency for thee, not for me,” but I do get his point.
The tush push ban was tabled this week, but Murphy still wants a ban.
The receiver in question is Landon Parker, who put up some dazzling numbers at the NFL Combine.
I was skeptical at first but this looks interesting the more I read about it.
