If you watched the Los Angeles Rams take on the Baltimore Ravens then you know exactly what “The kick” means when McVay said, “We gotta make that kick” as he spoke to the media after the Rams unconvincing win against Baltimore.
The kick in question was when Joshua Karty bounced a 26-yard field off the goal post instead of sending the short kick through the uprights.
Said McVay,
“Obviously you guys are gonna ask me about the field goal. I thought the protection was good, we gotta make the kick.”
In the age of the NFL where 50+ field goals are routine, the Rams can’t afford to have a kicker that misses from less than 30 yards out. No franchise can. With L.A. traveling to London next week, I am going to guess that Joshua Karty will keep his job into Week 7, but could the Rams make a change after the game in London and going into their Week 8 bye week?
That seems very plausible.
So Karty’s job isn’t safe, and that may true for a few members on special teams including its coordinator, Chase Blackburn.
The special team’s situation for the Rams continues worth being monitored, and that’s not what the Rams wanted 7 weeks into their season.
