When we think of field goals hitting the uprights in the NFL, we often think of devastating misses such as the famous “double doink” that involved the Chicago Bears years ago. But, sometimes, the ball hits the upright and somehow makes its way through.

That’s exactly what happened on Sunday night. The Washington Commanders nearly let the game slip away when a chip-shot field goal started to drift towards the right upright quickly, only to glance inside the uprights on the final play of an absolute classic NFC Wild Card Game between the Commanders and homestanding Tampa Bay Buccaneeers.

After the first four playoff games of the weekend were more-or-less duds, we finally got to watch a great game.

The game was pretty back-and-forth the whole way. But, just a few plays after a crucial goal-line stand by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, this fumble by Baker Mayfield changed everything.

The Commanders would score the go-ahead touchdown on a pass from Jayden Daniels to Terry McLaurin. The Buccaneers would tie the game up with a field goal with 4:41 left. That set up Jayden Daniels and company to go down the field and set up the winning field goal attempt.

Washington has had issues at kicker all year, and Zane Gonzalez is their sixth kicker this year. Still, the game-winning kick was a chip shot 37-yarder.

But, Zane Gonzalez mishit it, leading to a classic doink.

When we think playoff doinks, we think of this. It never gets old. Keep an eye on the mascot.

Commanders fans will remember their doink much more fondly than Bears fans.

Washington will head to Philadelphia next Sunday to take on their NFC East rival in the NFC Divisional Round
