A massive trade proposal has the Washington Commanders flipping Terry McLaurin to an NFC rival for another star wide receiver, following his request to be sent to another team.

On Thursday evening, news broke that Terry McLaurin requested a trade from the Commanders amid a contract dispute. The veteran wideout is seeking a new contract as he heads into the final year of his deal.

McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, has exceeded the 70-catch and 1,000-yard marks in five consecutive seasons. He formed excellent chemistry with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, leading Washington to 12 wins and a surprise NFC Championship Game appearance.

Following McLaurin’s trade request, several fans on X/Twitter floated the idea of the Commanders dealing their star wideout to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for Brandon Aiyuk:

The 49ers want a healthy, proven veteran — and Terry McLaurin fits that perfectly.

Last year, Brandon Aiyuk requested a trade from the 49ers before agreeing to a massive four-year contract extension worth $120 million. He caught 25 passes for 374 yards in seven games before unfortunately suffering a season-ending ACL tear in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Aiyuk exceeded the 70-catch and 1,000-yard marks for the 49ers in 2022 and 2023, and he’s under contract through 2028. He’s also three years younger than McLaurin, so a one-for-one swap makes sense for both teams, especially if Washington won’t give into its star wideout’s contract demands.

Commanders Should Pay Terry McLaurin

At the end of the day, Washington’s best bet is to pay Terry McLaurin what he wants. This team is just entering its championship window now, and “Scary Terry” was Daniels’ most trusted weapon last season.

Washington could trade McLaurin for draft picks (or another roster player), but the odds of receiving equal value in return are slim.

The Commanders are coming off their best season in 33 years. With plenty of cap space, they can easily afford to meet McLaurin’s asking price and ensure he’s a Commander for life.
