Police have arrested Washington Commanders cornerback Marshon Lattimore on weapons charges.
Authorities in Ohio are said to have found a firearm in the 29-year-old’s vehicle on Wednesday evening, according to 3News, taking him into custody as a result.
Records obtained by the outlet show that Lattimore is facing charges of carrying concealed weapons and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.
Lakewood police told 3News that Lattimore was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped for expired license plates and other traffic violations. Police said Lattimore was arrested for improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle because he did not inform the officer that a firearm was inside the vehicle when asked.
Authorities said Lattimore was booked into jail and later released pending further investigation. He did not have to post bond.
Meanwhile, the Commanders have released a statement. The NFC East team noted that they were aware of the situation and were gathering information.
They were not willing to offer any additional comment.
“We have been made aware of the arrest and are gathering more information,” a team spokesperson said.“We are in communication with the NFL League Office and have no further comment at this time.”
Lattimore went viral earlier in the season, taking criticism for a pregame speech before playing the Seattle Seahawks in November. Both he and quarterback Jayden Daniels sustained serious injuries in that game.
The former Ohio State star had registered 27 tackles, seven defended passes, and one interception in nine games before tearing his ACL. He had joined the Commanders via trade after a successful spell with the New Orleans Saints.
The NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2017, Lattimore was a four-time Pro Bowler in New Orleans.
The former Buckeye tallied 405 tackles, 88 defended passes, and 15 interceptions in 97 games for the Saints.
He has one year remaining on his deal, but is expected to be released due to the injury situation. He is also going to be 30 in May.
There’s no guaranteed money in his contract, and the Commanders can save $18.5 million if he’s a pre-June 1 or post-June 1 cut.
