Late in Sunday night’s 38-7 blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders’ quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a gruesome elbow injury.
Shortly after the game ended, it was confirmed that Daniels suffered a dislocated elbow on the play. He’s set to have an MRI to reveal whether he suffered any additional ligament damage in the incident.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn, who came under fire for having his star quarterback in the game despite the result being well out of hand, said the injury was nothing more than an unfortunate fluke.
“I’m gutted by it,” Dan Quinn said. “You don’t want to think that way where an injury could take place. It wasn’t a designed read or play to that spot. If we run it 50 times, it’s either a handoff or throw 50 times. So, yeah, it’s a bummer, man.”
But if you believe in any sort of fate or sports gods, it turns out that Daniels may well have his own mother to blame.
Daniels had a superstar rookie season, leading Washington on a shocking run to the NFC Championship Game. But he also suffered several injuries along the way.
Those injuries have continued into this season, which has led some fans to compare Daniels to former Commanders QB Robert Griffin III.
Griffin III, now an ESPN commentator, looked like a star for Washington before injuries derailed his career. Daniels’ mom, Regina Jackson, didn’t appreciate the comparisons between the two players.
“I wish you would stop manifesting RGIII on my son. Words are powerful and that’s all that’s talked about,” she posted on X.
Now look, it’s clear that Jackson does believe in the fates. And you can’t blame her for trying to protect her son. But in doing so, she may have applied the classic reverse jinx.
Hopefully, Daniels is able to recover from this injury and remain healthy throughout the remainder of his career. Unfortunately for Washington fans, however, this story is beginning to sound very familiar.
