The Washington Commanders are one of several teams that will be hosting former 49ers second-round pick, DE Drake Jackson, for a free agent visit. He is returning from a torn patellar tendon in his left knee that ended his 2023 season, and has kept him off the field until his attempted return this year. The knee reportedly wasn’t healing as fast as expected, and there were questions about whether he would be able to play football again.

Jackson has been medically cleared, and is now looking for his next team. He will be visiting the Commanders, along with the Jets and the Ravens per Adam Schefter. Washington has had a need at defensive end since before the season started, and injuries have already placed two players on IR(Deatrich Wise, Javontae Jean-Baptiste). Preston Smith was signed two weeks ago, but hasn’t been active for a game for the team that originally drafted him.

Drake Jackson will have to earn his spot back on an NFL roster, and will likely be a practice squad signing until he’s up to football speed again. He was a second-round pick by the 49ers in 2022 when current Commanders GM Adam Peters was San Francisco’s assistant GM. Jackson played in 23 games for the 49ers, and had three sacks in each of his seasons.
