Washington Commanders Free Agency: Veteran center signed after another OL injured

The Washington Commanders released OL Julian Good-Jones yesterday after he was injured against the Bengals on Monday Night Football. He will revert to the team’s injured reserve if he clears waivers. Good-Jones has been used at guard, but played center vs the Bengals and had a bad snap to Josh Johnson, which has been happening throughout training camp.

That injury opened up a spot on Washington’s 91-man roster, and they’ve filled it by signing a veteran center to help with their depth which is the shallowest on the team. Nick Harris was a 5th-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2020 NFL draft. He has started 6 games over four seasons with the Browns. He was also used at fullback in 2023, but wasn’t re-signed after his rookie contract ended. Harris signed with the Seahawks but was traded back to the Browns along with a 7th-round pick, for Cleveland’s 6th round pick.

Washington is entering the season with Tyler Biadasz at center for the second season. He started 15 games, and the falloff to replacements like Michael Deiter was significant. Nick Allegretti could also backup center, but the position is in need of a depth upgrade, especially with Deiter still on the roster. Harris comes in with a short amount of time to make an impression on the coaching staff.
