Update: Washington is paying some of Robinson’s $3.4 million salary to facilitate the trade

The Washington Commanders have reportedly traded RB Brian Robinson to the San Francisco 49ers for a sixth-round pick. Robinson was the team’s starter after he returned from being shot during a carjacking during training camp in his rookie season three years ago. Robinson has dealt with injuries every season, but continued to win the starting job until this year.

Washington drafted Jacory “Bill” Croskey Merritt in the 7th round, and has Austin Ekeler, Chris Rodriguez Jr, and Jeremy McNichols coming back from last season. Reports came out before the Commanders Monday Night Football game against the Bengals that Robinson was being shopped for a trade. He didn’t attend the game in a mutually agreement with the team, and his fate was sealed. The only question was whether Washington would be able to find a trade partner for a late round pick swap, or if he would be released to save $3.4 million against this years salary cap.

Robinson now gets the chance to go to the West Coast and start over in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. The Commanders get some cap relief, and a new-look running backs room.
