There have been rumors about Kliff Kingsbury being out in Washington even if he didn’t find a new job first. Those rumors appear to be true with ESPN’s Adam Schefter reporting that Kingsbury and the Commanders have mutually agreed to part ways. Head coach Dan Quinn already took over playcalling duties from DC Joe Whitt Jr., and is expected to look for a new DC. Now he will need two new coordinators for his third season with the Commanders.
Kingsbury was brought in after backing out of a deal to become OC for the Las Vegas Raiders over it’s length. He found success with NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels leading his offense, but injuries to Daniels and other starters hurt the offense’s production, and the team’s record. Changes were expected, and more are on the way.
This offseason will be critical for Quinn after the disappointment of this 5-12 that started with high hopes after getting to the NFC Championship game in their first season. He will need to nail both hires for his new coordinators, whether that’s from someone already on the staff, someone he’s worked with before, or a new addition to his coaching tree. Offensive coordinator will be significant in the continued development of Jayden Daniels, and working on building an offense he is comfortable in, and protected by.

Washington could also need losing offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury if he decides to leave for a head coaching opportunity after the season ends. He received interest from several teams last year, but the Commanders were in a deep playoff run, and he told reporters he was focused on the team. He made similar comments on Thursday, saying he was focused on this week’s game, and getting 39-year old veteran QB Josh Johnson ready for his second start. Kingsbury is also still getting paid head coach money from his extension with the Arizona Cardinals for next season.
